Best Time to Photograph An Outdoor Session and Why

July 7, 2023

When is the best time to photograph an outdoor session and why? I get asked this a lot for when I get ready to book a session. For one because the clients trust my opinion as a professional to best photograph them during the right time of day. It also helps me lock in a date and time when a client sends in an inquiry. I’ll also discuss why I choose certain time frames that I feel is best to photograph any outdoor session.

Best and not so best time to Photograph An Outdoor Session

The “golden hour” is often considered the best time for outdoor portrait photography. It refers to the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sunlight is soft, warm, and diffused. The lighting during this time tends to be flattering, with long shadows and a gentle glow. It does tend to be a cooler weather, so if I am doing a family session I’ll choose this time frame. I personally like to photograph an hour after sunrise starts or an before after sunset begins, so I can keep my work consist if I am doing a mini session. It speeds up editing time when the lighting is usually the same for 2-3 hours that I photograph. It brings out a more evening lighting/exposures.

If I have to photograph during the “golden hour” and I don’t want that look then I’ll play with white balance in my a program I have called Lightroom. Adjusting the white balance settings can have a significant impact on the overall color tone of my images.

Most people are not aware, but normally the best time to NOT photograph is during the middle of the day! For multiple reasons like the temp is at it’s highest and work/school schedule. Avoid shooting in harsh midday sunlight, as it can create unflattering shadows and blown-out highlights. Only time I could end up photographing during the middle of the day is if it’s an overcast weather. Overcast or cloudy days can provide soft, diffused lighting that is ideal for capturing subtle details or moody atmospheres.

At the end of the day you pick the best and right time you need for your family! These are just helpful tips to guide you and to help you understand why most photographers like myself choose these times of day for an outdoor photo session.
