Tips for Choosing Locations for Family Sessions

September 13, 2023

It’s nice to know tips for choosing locations when it comes to family sessions. On my spare time when I can I like to scout places. There are five tips that come to my mind that I know is what I think of when it comes to choosing locations for me to photograph! Once I do I document the area. I also help guide my wonderful clients to choose which location they like based on photos I share and their vision.

5 Tips for Choosing Location

  1. Lighting: Lighting is one of the most critical aspects of photography. The quality and direction of light can dramatically impact your photos. Soft, diffused natural light (such as during the golden hour, shortly after sunrise or before sunset) is often preferred for portraits and landscapes, while harsh midday sun can create strong shadows. Consider how the light interacts with your subject and the overall mood you want to convey.
  2. Composition: Look for locations with interesting and diverse compositions. Think about the rule of thirds, leading lines, symmetry, and framing. A visually appealing setting can add depth and interest to your photos.
  3. Scenery and Background: The background of your photo can significantly influence the overall look and feel of your image. Consider the elements in the background and how they complement or distract from your subject. Look for backgrounds that enhance your subject rather than detract from it.
  4. Time of Day: The time of day can greatly impact the lighting and mood of your photos. As mentioned earlier, the golden hour is often preferred, but other times of day can also offer unique opportunities for capturing different atmospheres
  5. Open Shade: When looking for a location, finding an area with open shade is key. Direct sunlight can cause harsh shadows and overexposure which can be unflattering in photographs. Open shade provides a soft, diffused light that is perfect for portraits.

Ultimately, the best location for photographing is one that aligns with both the clients and my creative vision.
